Children need to feel comfortable

Above is Finn, I photographed him two years ago in Australia while on vacation. He was about 2.5 years old, and shy at first. His mom and I had him pretend he was a sailor and guided him to play on top the boats… It only took him about 2 minutes to warm up to me following him with a camera in hand. Eventually he made his mom and I become pirates, trying to board his boat and he was having a great time…

Going into a photoshoot with young children, I always want the child or children to feel comfortable with their surroundings, and whom they are interacting with (me: photographer). I always encourage the child to explore the area we have chosen for the photoshoot, I like striking up fun conversations with them to help them feel relaxed and comfortable before the session begins. I encourage the child to focus on ‘Role Play’ (be a ‘sailor’ or ‘captain’ with all these boats around) and watch their movement and see them enjoying their time… Now it’s time to start photographing the child… They will warm up to the idea of you following them around snapping pictures; eventually they will include you in the process of their story.
